the essential
The Malinois shepherd Cookie, a sniffer dog of the Tarn national police, was accidentally run over by a truck on January 3 in a parking lot at the Pratgraussals leisure center. A minute of silence was observed this Monday morning in the courtyard of the Albi police headquarters.
It was a simple walk to the Pratgraussals leisure center in Albi that turned into a tragedy. The drivers of Cookie and Orka, the two Malinois from the dog brigade of the Tarn national police, had brought them there on Friday January 3 at the beginning of the afternoon to “relax” them.
But while they were in one of the Pratgraussals parking lots, near the sewage treatment plant, a truck mowed down Cookie. The driver had not seen the animal, which died following the violence of the shock.
An accident which left the Tarn national police in mourning. A minute of silence was observed this Monday morning in the courtyard of the Albi police headquarters, also in the presence of representatives of the canine brigade of the Albi municipal police.
A police officer in her own right, with her own number, Cookie was just 2 years old when she took up her duties within the departmental directorate of the national police (DDPN) of Tarn in 2023. She had been spotted in a kennel in the Lyon region and then trained, with his handler Frédéric, to detect all types of narcotics but also bank notes.
A real complicity
She thus became the first sniffer dog of the national police in the department, multiplying interventions to assist investigators during searches, in all the police districts of Tarn (Albi, Carmaux, Castres, Mazamet) but also to lend a helping hand in other departments of Occitanie.
“We learn to read the dog's reactions when it enters an apartment or a house. They are very gifted. For them it's a game, we see that she enjoys it,” her son explained to La Dépêche. driver Frédéric, who had developed a real bond with Cookie.
Her box had been set up outside the Albi police headquarters but she also sometimes joined him in his office. Outside of working hours, he hosted her at his home.
At the end of last year, the dog brigade received reinforcements from Orka, another 6-year-old Malinois, and her driver, again to fight against drug trafficking. Following Cookie's death, a new dog could join the brigade to succeed him.
