The head of French diplomacy Jean-Noël Barrot expressed “doubts” on Sunday about Algiers' desire to respect the road map for Franco-Algerian bilateral relations. He also repeated his concerns about the case of writer Boualem Sansal, detained in Algeria since mid-November for endangering state security.
The French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, expressed doubts, Sunday January 5, during an interview on private radio RTL, about Algiers' desire to respect the road map of Franco-Algerian bilateral relations .
“In 2022 (…) we wrote a roadmap (…), we want to do this [qu’elle] can be followed,” he said.
Paris and Algiers found the path to a warming of their relations during a trip by President Emmanuel Macron to Algeria in August 2022.
The two heads of state had signed with great fanfare a joint declaration paving the way in particular for a relaxation of the visa regime granted to Algeria in exchange for increased cooperation from Algiers in the fight against illegal immigration.

“We wish to maintain the best relations with Algeria (…) but this is not the case today,” regretted the French minister.
