Drink the delight down to the dregs

January will be dry, or it won’t be. Nothing to do with global warming and the snow level at the Ski World Cup. We’re talking here about Dry January – which means we get through the inaugural month without a drop of alcohol.
An initiative that clearly did not come from the brain of someone born at this time of year. To obtain the desired effect, the process must be accompanied by a strong relay on social networks. Showing off until you’re thirsty, even if it means getting drunk.
This resolution – a necessary part of the slide towards the new year – has for some time now joined the armada available to the human species. Just like quitting smoking, finally getting your damn driving license or (re)starting sport.
Before listening to coach Kevin Ferreira explain to us that anyone can sculpt the physique of a Hollywood star. With a little discipline, strength training and good will. Looking at myself in the mirror in the morning, I was seized with a slight doubt. I have to tell you.
A skepticism however swept away Friday evening when I went to bed. I’m sharper than a world champion, of darts certainly, but the youngest champion in history nonetheless. Luke Littler, “The Nuke”, imploded the kingdom by beating the Dutchman Michael van Gerwen in the final. A triumph so deliciously British, made of songs, absurd disguises and pints of beer. Far be it from me to sing the praises of alcohol.
Dry January is good and forces us to ask ourselves some life-saving questions. But I wish you for 2025 to experience as often as possible the kind of happiness that Luke Littler offered his fans. Sport, self-deprecation, shared joy. And there’s nothing like more sustained physical activity and a better lifestyle to enjoy it for as long as possible.
