An Anderlecht resident finds her car burned the day after New Year: a donation campaign raises 20,000 euros

After discovering his car burned in Anderlecht, Sidonie moved many citizens. Thanks to a crowdfunding campaign, more than 20,000 euros have already been raised to help him buy a new vehicle.

Sidonie, a resident of Anderlecht, experienced a shock the day after the New Year: her car, parked on Place Lemmens, was found completely burned. In an interview with our colleagues at Bruzz, she confided: “This car had not only emotional value, but also material value. I won’t get anything from the insurance companies, because I didn’t have comprehensive coverage.” Devastated, she spoke of the need to take out a loan to buy a new vehicle.

A dazzling surge of solidarity

Touched by this story, Tamara De Koninck, a citizen of Asse, launched a crowdfunding campaign with the support of the Brussels non-profit organization Capital. In less than three hours, donations had exceeded 10,000 euros. In less than 24 hours, this amount doubled, reaching 20,000 euros, and contributions continue to flow.

Hassan Al Hilou, of the non-profit organization Capital, called for this solidarity to be extended to other victims of the car fires that occurred during New Year’s Eve. On X (formerly Twitter), he asked: “Does anyone know of another New Year’s Eve victim whose car caught fire, without comprehensive insurance, and who is in trouble? Please put them in touch with me.”

For owners of burned cars, the situation remains complicated. Towing fees must be paid until the fires are classified as a criminal matter. In the absence of comprehensive insurance, damages will not be reimbursed unless the perpetrator is identified and forced to pay for repairs.
