A storm threatens the Îles-de-la-Madeleine and Gaspésie

The Îles-de-la-Madeleine and Gaspésie are preparing to receive a winter storm on Sunday and Monday. Environment Canada indicates that these are the ups and downs of a weather system coming from Newfoundland.

From Sunday morning, the archipelago will be the scene of strong winds, accompanied by snow and blowing snow in open areas.

Northwesterly gusts hitting the islands will reach maximum speeds of 70 to 90 km/h. Snow accumulations of between 15 and 20 centimeters are also expected.

Such weather conditions could potentially cause power outages in places, according to Environment Canada. Hydro-Québec confirms that it has four teams on site, ready to react if necessary.

Strong winds coupled with blowing snow will reduce visibility when driving, making travel difficult or even dangerous. If travel is necessary, Environment Canada suggests allowing extra time to get to your destination.

The Gaspé coastline on alert

Meteorologist at Environment and Climate Change Canada, Antoine Petit predicts winter storm conditions along the Gaspé coast. Less wind is expected than in the Magdalen Islands, with gusts not expected to exceed 70 km/h.

Snow accumulations should, however, be a little more significant. We are talking about 20 to 30 centimeters of snow that will fall from Sainte-Anne-des-Monts to Forillon Parkhe says.

The meteorologist reminds that the risk of blowing snow which could affect visibility remains present.

The good news is that tides are generally low on Sunday and Monday [dans l’Est]so serious repercussions are not expected [ni modérées qui seraient causées par des] breaking waves on the coastunderlines Antoine Petit.
