They spent five hours taken hostage by an inmate in Arles prison this Friday, January 3. Three nurses, a doctor and a supervisor, all safe and sound. The prison guard, resident of Saint-Gilles (Gard), tells “ici Gard Lozère” about these long hours in the establishment's infirmary. “He asked me to go to the bathroom and he came out with a homemade weapon,” explains Alberto.
This Gardois then finds himself locked up with the four health professionals and decides to confront the inmate. “I am trained. I had a par-blade vest. I'd rather be in the middle than put medical personnel in danger without protection.” After five hours of negotiating with the Raid on the phone, the hostages are freed.
“We are never really prepared”
Alberto has worked in the prison world for more than ten years and has already been confronted with these situations, but the prison guard has difficulty putting into words what he feels. “It remains something unusual and we are never really prepared.”he emphasizes.
