Immerse yourself in a universe where refinement and history blend harmoniously. The church of Lachapelle (Tarn-et-Garonne), originally a castle chapel, was erected as a parish church in the 15th century. However, its real glory comes from the developments carried out in the 18th century thanks to the fortune of two brothers, the Goulards: one, a priest, and the other, a vicar.
These two benefactors entrusted a talented carpenter and cabinetmaker from Lectoure, named Champaigne, with the mission of transforming this church into a Baroque masterpiece. This ambitious project, completed in 1776, made this building a treasure of French religious heritage.
A breathtaking baroque style
The interior decor, typical of the baroque style in vogue under Louis XV, embodies the elegance and exuberance of the “Rocaille style” or “Rococo”. This artistic style, mixing plant and mineral motifs, evokes the delicate shapes of shells and marine rockeries. In this church, the walls are adorned with finely carved and molded woodwork, decorated with columns with Corinthian capitals topped with fire pots. Between these majestic columns, large paintings, created at the beginning of the 19th century, replace those destroyed during the French Revolution.
The true jewel of this church lies in its exceptional galleries, unique in France. Three rows of concave and convex stands, reminiscent of the alcoves of a Venetian theater, rise above the assembly. Made from painted and gilded molded wood, they amaze with their theatrical architecture. Each arcade is decorated with a sculpted cartouche representing plants or murex shells, enhancing the baroque character of the whole.
A trompe-l'oeil ceiling and treasures to admire
The current ceiling, restored in 1991, is a faithful reproduction of that of the 18th century. Made from trompe-l'oeil wallpaper, it perfectly imitates boxes, offering a striking perspective. Among the other wonders of this church, don't miss the 18th century lectern. This desk, formed by two eagles symbolizing Saint John the Evangelist, is made of gilded and silvered wood, demonstrating remarkable craftsmanship.

Stage of the Ronde des crèches
For the first time, Lachapelle appears on the Ronde des crèches circuit. Organized by the eponymous association based in Miradoux (Gers), this free event, which attracts 20,000 visitors between Gers and Tarn-et-Garonne, has chosen, for its 29th edition, the theme of world carnivals.
At the Lachapelle church, the Venice carnival is evoked. Another reason to open the doors of the church. Mansonville is the other Tarn-et-Garonnaise stage of the 2024-2025 Crèche Round. Not to be missed until January 12.
