Carnival 2025: the program
Carnival 2025: the program

It's gone for more than two months. Carnival 2025 will end on March 5. The Peyi Guyana Carnival Office has published a provisional program. Here's what awaits you.

If the purists start the carnival after the arrival of His Majesty Vaval, it is clear that some carnival-goers have already started partying : dance classes, private evenings… For others, the program “ official », starts with the traditional flea market, Brok Vaval. An opportunity that Julie*, 26 years old, arrived in Guyana three months ago, will not miss. « I would like to participate in the carnival. This will be the first for me. As I've only been here for a short time, I don't have a lot of money so the idea of going to a flea market seems great to me to get a costume at a lower cost. »

For this 2025 edition, Alexis Domput, president of the Peyi Carnival Office, promises everyone to “ experience unforgettable moments: the opening of the street carnival with our “ Touloulous challenge », in on Sunday January 12, 2025, colorful parades, masked balls, dazzling costume competitions, and many other surprises ».

Ce « Touloulous challenge “, it is, for the Carnival Office, an opportunity to (re)live traditional touloulous, including our famous dirty touloulous. They are the ones who will launch the first street parade in Cayenne, on Sunday January 12. Meet at 3:30 p.m. at the Stade scolaire avenue d'Estrées in Cayenne). « People have the opportunity to dress up on site, indicates the Office. Everyone comes with their own costume : old-fashioned touloulou, dancing touloulou, dirty touloulou. The idea is that this group, which will be preceded by a float, opens the parade and strolls to the Palmistes, having interactions with the public. »

For the organizers, the objective is twofold. First of all, it’s about bringing back to light the characters of yesteryear. Then, interactions with the public will provide great visibility to the emblematic character of the Guyana carnival, particularly on social networks where everyone is invited to post with the hashtag #touloulouschalenge. The Peyi Guyane Carnival Office is counting on the participation of 300 Touloulous per month. Participants who wish to do so can register in advance. But to respect tradition, registration can be anonymous ; it will just serve to give an idea of the number of participants. Of course, and this is what makes the essence of dirty touloulou, carnival-goers can spontaneously join the group on the big day, dressed in their costume.
