A leap of more than a hundred years into the past. This is what fans of king cakes this January by going to the Fournil de la Roselière in Sainte-Opportune-la-Mare (Eure), near Pont-Audemer. For the third year, the bakery offers unique beans. This time, they are photos of old postcards which appear on the beans. “We chose the theme of the belle époque,” says Aurélie Servagerthe baker.

These six postcards, from individuals or unearthed in departmental archives, date from the beginning of the 20th century. Queens and kings will be able to discover the Sainte-Opportune church, the Jouan house (today the Bistrot de la Grande Mare), the house of the Roselière guard, the town hall of the time (today the Ambulances of the Seine), the old inn that became a home or even a woman duck hunting.

Additional sales

Beans that will bring back memories for the oldest, but which should also interest the youngest: “My son told me when he looked at them that it hadn’t changed! » underlines the owner of the Fournil. The bakers of Sainte-Opportune were once again keen to offer original and local beans. “Customers like it, so we continue!” » Indeed, the sale of king cakes has jumped over the past three years: “We went from 500 to around 700 king cakes sold »confirms Aurélie. And the closure of the Quillebeuf bakery since mid-September should not slow down consumption. Which doesn't necessarily delight the baker: “It's always worrying to see other businesses close. »

Two years ago, six emblematic places of the town were represented on the beans. Last year, traders went beyond municipal limits by representing places or activities in neighboring municipalities. Since December 26, the box including the six beans has been on sale for 20 euros. The galettes des rois (6 to 8 people) are with frangipane, raspberry and apple. For several years, the Fournil de la Roselière has provided cakes for communities (wishes ceremony) and numerous associations.

A first for the Savalle bakery in Toutainville

Isabelle and Denis Savallebased in Toutainville, decided to innovate this year. Not finding happiness in the proposals of the company which usually supplies the beans, the baker wanted to surprise the customers. Frangipane lovers will not “fall” on the traditional figurines or Disney characters but on an emblematic place of the village. “We hope that it will please the older people, but also the younger ones,” emphasizes Isabelle.

Since last summer, their daughter, Sophie, a professional photographer, and a friend, Katia Lamontook the photos, under the sun.

The galettes des rois have been on sale since December 24 in the bakery, also specialized in pastries and chocolate. The store also offers some grocery products. “We have already had orders for pancakes,” she notes. It is possible to obtain the collector's box and at the end of the month, people who wish will be able to complete their collection of Toutainville beans.
