The recently published UK Food Security Report for 2024 highlights the growing importance of agricultural relations between the UK and Morocco, particularly in terms of food exports. According to data from the British Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, imports of agricultural products from Morocco recorded a significant increase in 2023.

Morocco ranks among the top exporters of fresh vegetables to the UK, accounting for 7.5% of total UK exports in this area in 2023. The report also highlights other key suppliers, such as Spain, the Netherlands, and Poland. This diversification of supply sources strengthens the UK’s resilience to global disruption, whether caused by extreme weather conditions or geopolitical tensions.

The document also addresses the issue of fertilizer production, a sector where Morocco plays a crucial role. Like China and the United States, the kingdom is among the world’s leading producers of natural phosphates, an essential raw material for the manufacture of fertilizers. Although phosphate production fell slightly by 1.9% between 2019 and 2022, the long-term outlook remains oriented towards sustained growth.

Published every three years, the UK Food Security Report analyzes past, present and future trends related to this strategic issue. Based on data from official, academic and international sources, it constitutes a solid analytical basis to guide public policies and decisions on food security. It aims to help government, Parliament, food chain stakeholders and the general public monitor food safety and proactively address emerging challenges.
