The Vendée firefighters provide some advice.

When it comes to maintenance, it is important to have a few reflexes.

“Before lighting your chimney, have your chimney inspected and/or swept by a professional every year, check that the smoke detectors in your fireplace are working properly and never leave a lit chimney unattended”

During this holiday season, some basic precautions should be taken: “choose your decorations carefully, favor electric garlands certified to European standards (CE marking), turn off your garlands before going to bed or leaving your home, use suitable sockets and extension cords and do not overload them, do not use flammable decorations near heat sources, such as foliage or wooden decorations, do not leave candles burning“, warns the Vendée departmental fire and rescue operational center.

Evacuate the premises and close the doors

Finally, you need to make sure that your tree is far away from a radiator, fireplace or wood stove.

What should you do if, despite everything, a fire breaks out and it is not possible to put it out? The firefighters advise you to evacuate the premises, close the doors (interior and exterior) and move to safety. Notify emergency services by dialing 18 or 112.
