President Bassirou Diomaye Faye announced the withdrawal of all foreign troops, including French soldiers, on Senegalese soil, during the year 2025. At the same time, the Ivorian President, Alassane Ouattara, confirmed the handover of the military base French from Abidjan to Ivory Coast.
In Paris, these two pieces of news sound like a disappointment for France’s African policy. Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of La France Insoumise, thinks that Paris must review its relationship with African countries. “The French army is expelled from Ivory Coast by the one it had installed in power. And from Senegal. Wiped off the map, the old world must not drag us into its nothingness. It is time for France to move on to other relations with the peoples of Africa. The rebellious diplomatic model is the future,” wrote Jean-Luc Mélenchon on X.
Note that the leader of LFI was the first French politician invited by the new power in Senegal.
