A nice gift to celebrate the new year. On the night of January 1 to 2, 2025, the Northern Lights were observed in France.
2024 will have accustomed us to this light phenomenon that we thought was reserved for the northernmost countries of our hemisphere. Those of May 11, 2024 will have been particularly powerful. Or even last October 11.
In this area, 2025 is off to a good start. From the Basque country to the Jura, Internet users have posted magnificent images on social networks.
Dawns predicted
They were announced. This January 1, 2025, in the early evening, the Operational Center for Meteorology of the Alps Area (Comea) spoke about it on its X account (formerly Twitter), noting that there was “a lot of geomagnetic activity” .
« If the sky is cleara red veil could be visible in the early evening,” predicted the center, while remaining cautious.
A strong geomagnetic storm G4 (out of 5) took place. “More intense than forecast,” recalls the specialized media Xplora.
From the Basque country to the Jura
In places, the weather conditions were favorable. Indeed, many Internet users have posted photos of the Northern Lights on social networks.
Côte d'Azur, Basque country, Jura, Côte-d'Or, Ardèche… many regions have had the chance to observe them.
How does the aurora borealis form?
Remember that the Northern Lights are difficult to anticipate. Concretely, they form with the interaction between charged particles from the solar wind and the upper atmosphere.
“This phenomenon is linked to the Sun, which sends a wind of particles (electrons, protons, etc.) constantly into the atmosphere. This wind encounters what is in its path, and when it passes close to the Earth, in its magnetic field, it interacts with terrestrial elements,” explained Fabrice Mottez, editor-in-chief of the journal.
