XALIMANEWS: The Mauritanian and Senegalese ministries responsible for Energy announce that they have officially opened the first well of the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project, which is located on the maritime border of Senegal and Mauritania.

”The ministries responsible for Energy in Mauritania and Senegal, Petrosen and the Mauritanian Hydrocarbons Company proudly announce the official opening of the first well of the GTA project,” write the communications services of the two ministerial departments.

”The achievement of this important milestone marks a major step in the completion of the GTA project and consolidates the existing exemplary partnership between Mauritania and Senegal, which are now destined to play a key role in the regional energy industry”, they emphasize.

The joint press release recalls that the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim project is ”developed” by the Mauritanian Hydrocarbons Company, the Senegal Petroleum Company, BP and Kosmos Energy.

This project “represents one of the largest deepwater gas discoveries in the region. Driven by exemplary cooperation between the two nations, [il] demonstrates their commitment to sustainably exploit natural resources, for the benefit of the populations and economies of the two countries,” say the communication services of the two ministries.

They declare that ”the opening of the first well of the project marks the culmination of technical operations and paves the way for the start of gas marketing planned very soon”.

”The opening of gas wells is a historic step for Senegal. It reflects our common vision with Mauritania to make the GTA project a successful model of energy collaboration,” says the press release, quoting Birame Souleye Diop, the Minister responsible for Energy, Oil and Mines in Senegal.

Mohamed Ould Khaled, the Mauritanian Minister of Energy and Oil, believes that “this exemplary partnership with Senegal demonstrates the capacity [des] two countries to achieve ambitious and sustainable objectives together.

”The energy future of our region looks promising,” he hopes.

”The opening of the first well of the GTA field [a] took place this Tuesday, December 31, 2024 at 5 p.m.,” specifies the Mauritanian Information Agency (AMI) quoting Mr. Ould Khaled.

The latter declares that this step marks the start of gas production on the Senegalese-Mauritanian border.

Production ”will continue with the liquefaction of the first gas molecules with a view to their export during the first quarter of 2025,” adds AMI, quoting the same minister.

According to Mohamed Ould Khaled, the gas production capacity of the GTA field is estimated at 2.5 million tonnes per year. It is expected to increase to 10 million tonnes per year in the coming years, he said.
