We've been talking about it for 10 years and it's coming to the North! Already well advanced in the Oise since 2022, the Seine Nord Europe canal construction site will start early 2025 on the side of'Aubencheul-au-Bacbetween Cambrai and Douai, with the construction of a quay works.
It's 2030 that the Seine-Nord Europe canal will connect Compiègne in Oise to Aubencheul-au-Bac in Cambrésis. 54 m wide, it will measure 107 km. Work began in October 2022 and is progressing well.
9 months of work begins
The Seine-Nord Europe canal wants to revolutionize the transport of goods by relying on large barges rather than trucks between France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
A new stage will be reached from the beginning of 2025. A portion of 28 km will cross the Artois-Cambrésis sector, making the junction with the large river network of the Sensée canal in Aubencheul-au-Bac. . The work on the northern part will last 9 months.
A works dock to reduce the impact of the construction site
What will the work at Aubencheul-au-Bac consist of? It is about carry out a new 121 meter quay. The goal: to facilitate the supply of aggregates for the construction of the Oisy-le-Verger lock (25 meters of drop, one of the highest on the future Canal and even in Europe). This will be a temporary dock.
A canal bridge, an inland port, two locks
Other work will follow:
- The A26 canal bridgein the Marquion-Bourlon sector, where river convoys will pass above the highway.
- The Marquion-Bourlon and Oisy-le-Verger locks, exceptional in their modernity. With approximately 25 meters of waterfall height each, they will be the highest in Europe.
- The inner port of Marquion-Cambrai will be created, 156 hectares will be developed as an extension of the E-Valley logistics park.
The North Canal will be impacted by the commissioning of the Seine Nord Europe canal, with an evolution. Between lock No. 2 of Marquion and the Sensée canal, the Canal du Nord will remain open to navigation, thus allowing the continuity of activity of the current port of Marquion. South of Marquion, it will no longer be navigable.
The Nord Department is co-financing the construction of the Seine-Nord Europe canal to the tune of 217 million euros. The total budget is 5 billion.
