Ten people were killed and 30 injured after a vehicle plowed into crowds on Canal and Bourbon Street in New Orleans on Wednesday, according to NOLA Ready, the city’s emergency preparedness agency.
The driver of a pick-up drove into the crowd, trying to “run over as many people as he could”, a police official in the American city, Anne Kirkpatrick, told the press shortly after.
“He was fiercely determined to cause carnage”she insisted.
Authorities have asked the population to avoid the area.
The agency said the injured were taken to five local hospitals.
The incident occurred near the end of New Year’s Eve celebrations in New Orleans and hours before kickoff of the AllState Bowl, a college football quarterfinal held in the city’s Caesars Superdome, at which thousands of people are expected to attend.
