The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) said he narrowly escaped death during Israeli strikes on Thursday, December 26, on the airport of the Yemeni capital.
He was about to board when the alarm sounded. CCTV footage shows the WHO chief being quickly escorted in a panic from the private lounge of Sanaa airport to Yemen. He barely had time to take cover when a first missile hit the control tower. A second falls not far from the track. There are three deaths at the airport.
Part of the crew of the UN plane is injured. It was a close call for the senior official. “It's a question of luck. If the missile had not deviated even a little, it would have been on our heads”he says. Three days after this strike, the UN was outraged. The WHO chief was in Yemen on a humanitarian mission. Hours later, the Houthis responded. They, in turn, tried to target an airport, that of Tel Aviv, without success.
