The breakdown caused the ship to run aground last Thursday on rocks in the maritime area between Nador and Melilla, under the influence of strong winds and sea currents.

According to a press release from the Royal Armed Forces, a specialized naval unit was quickly deployed to provide the necessary assistance, respecting maritime safety standards adapted to the rocky nature of the site and the unfavorable weather conditions.

The towing operation is progressing at a sustained pace to ensure the safety of the ship and its return to the port of Nador, the FAR said.

A technical committee has been constituted to investigate the causes of this incident and suggest preventive measures to avoid such accidents in the future.

For their part, authorities in Melilla expressed optimism about a rapid resolution of the situation, while emphasizing continued coordination with Moroccan authorities. Fadila Mokhtar, spokesperson for the Melilla government, reassured that the Moroccan ship was not in danger of sinking, given that the water depth in the affected area is around two meters.

The Spanish press reported the dispatch of a rescue team, equipped with divers and specialized equipment, from the port of Motril. However, this team did not carry out an intervention, due to lack of request from the Moroccan authorities.
