The average quantity of municipal waste generated per person in Belgium increased from 683 kg in 2022 to 694 kg in 2023, an increase of 1.6 percent. Despite this increase, waste production per capita remains significantly lower than the 760 kg recorded in 2021. This is what Statbel reports.
Nationally, the total amount of municipal waste collected increased from 7,915 tonnes in 2022 to 8,117 tonnes in 2023, an increase of 2.5 percent year-on-year. In 2023, 45 percent of municipal waste was incinerated, 34 percent was recycled, 20 percent was composted or fermented, and a negligible 0.1 percent was landfilled.
