After the Bloc Québécois, it is the turn of the NDP to say it is ready to support the motion of censure which will be presented to the Public Accounts Committee by the Conservatives, with the aim of bringing down the Trudeau government, at the end of the month of January. But Jagmeet Singh’s party doubts that the tactic will work and says it is ready to subsequently table its own motion of censure in the House of Commons.
The NDP believes that the strategy used this time by the Conservatives may not produce the expected results.
Since parliament is adjourned, it is through a parliamentary committee — the Public Accounts Committee — that the Conservatives have decided this time to move forward with their motion of censure.
The members of this committee, including Liberals, will meet starting January 7 and submit a report which will then be put to a vote in the House of Commons at the end of the month.
However, “in the past, motions of censure adopted in committee have not worked, which is why we will be ready to present our own motion of censure,” explains the parliamentary leader of the NDP, Peter Julian, in an email sent At Journal.
The Liberals could, for example, maintain that the committee’s opinion is not equivalent to a vote of confidence in the House and remain in place, we are told.
Categorical
Peter Julian is, however, categorical: “The NDP is ready to support a motion of censure […] which describes how the Liberals have failed Canadians,” he says, echoing the words of his leader, Jagmeet Singh, who said, on December 20, that “the New Democrats will vote to bring down the government Trudeau at the first opportunity. »
If a motion of censure is indeed adopted in the House of Commons in 2025, it will lead to the fall of the Liberal government and the triggering of an early election campaign.
