The Paris police headquarters unveiled, this Sunday, the security system for the New Year's Eve evening on the Avenue des Champs-Elysées. 10,000 law enforcement officers will be mobilized. Traffic restrictions are also to be expected alongside the festivities, certain RER and metro stations will also be closed.
10,000 police officers and gendarmes will be mobilized in Paris and the inner suburbs on the occasion of New Year's Eve, the police headquarters announced this Sunday, December 29 in a press release.
A reinforced security system which aims to “guarantee the safety of people and property, and to prevent disturbances to public order, in a context of still high terrorist threat”, she affirms.
Traffic and parking prohibited
Two days before the famous evening, traffic restrictions have already been put in place starting this Sunday. “The Etoile plateau and the top of the Champs-Elysées between Étoile and Tilsitt/Presbourg are inaccessible due to the assembly operations necessary for the organization of the festivities,” indicates the police headquarters. Traffic is also prohibited in portions of the 8th, 16th and 17th arrondissements (see maps below).
Then, other measures will be added the same day. Parking will be prohibited from 7 a.m. Motorized traffic will be prohibited on Avenue des Champs-Elysées from 3 p.m. and a security perimeter with filtering points will be set up.
The police headquarters also took the opportunity to point out that the sale and consumption of alcohol is prohibited on public roads from 4 p.m., as well as the carrying and use of fireworks in a wider area around the Champs- Elysees.
Several RER and metro stations closed
As for public transport in the capital, a special system is also planned. Several RER and metro stations will be closed to the public. “Connections within stations will, however, remain possible,” assures the police headquarters.
The station Charles de Gaulle–Etoile (lines 1,2 and 6) will be closed from midnight and for RER A, from 3 p.m.
The stations on line 1 between Royal Palace-Louvre Museum et Swimsuit holder (i.e. Tuileries, Concorde, Champs-Élysées Clemenceau, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Georges V, CDG Etoile and Argentine) will be closed from 3 p.m.
Other stations will also be subject to closure: Passion (ligne 6), Jena et Saint-Philippe du Roule (line 9) from 7 p.m., Duplex (line 6) from 9 p.m., Boissiere (line 6) from 11 p.m. and Dull (line 2) from 00:10.
“Although there are no events or festivities in the Trocadéro-Champs-de-Mars-Tour Eiffel sector, in the event of crowds, certain exits from the Trocadéro and La Motte-Picquet Grenelle stations will be closed in order to to enable optimal management of flows,” she warns.
Like every year, a show will take place on Avenue des Champs-Élysées. It will start at 7 p.m. until 11:40 p.m. and will be followed by a video mapping on the Arc de Triomphe. The evening will end with the traditional fireworks display at midnight.
