They were found on every street corner. But today, parking meters are disappearing from cities. In Paris, there are only 3,700 left, three times fewer than 15 years ago.
A complicated situation to manage for some Parisians, like for Emile Guetta, who has lived there for 50 years: “I'm an elderly person, I'm retired. I have to go further to find a parking meter. It's inconvenient. I'm not computer literate. If I don't pay with my card, I'm bored.”
This other motorist, Hugues Neghnagh, a salesman who goes to Paris four times a week for his work. “My big problem is that there are few parking meters”he says.
“Since parking meters are disappearing, the big problem is that we are going to park the car. We are going to look for the parking meter but when we come back, we already have a ticket. The application has become essential”he continues.
In recent years, payment by mobile phone has exploded. Today, 7 out of 10 drivers regulate their parking remotely using applications.
After 50 years of existence, will parking meters finally disappear? The City of Paris assures us that no. It must be said that they allow a significant influx of money. Parking represents 230 million euros in the capital.
