Frenchman Serge Atlaoui has been imprisoned for almost 20 years in Indonesia after being accused of drug trafficking. After a legal and diplomatic fight to avoid his execution, France has just requested his repatriation.
After almost 20 years spent in Indonesian jails, will Serge Atlaoui, sentenced to death for drug trafficking, soon be transferred to France? This is the wish of the authorities who have just requested his transfer. Aged 61, he has continued to proclaim his innocence. “We await confirmation with great joy and some apprehension”confides Me Richard Sedillot, his lawyer.
In 2005, during an anti-drug raid, the artisan welder from Metz was arrested while working in an ecstasy manufacturing laboratory. He said he was recruited to install machinery in what he believed to be an acrylic factory. Serge Atlaoui was paid 8,000 euros per month under the table. According to justice, he was the drug traffickers' chemist. In 2007, he was sentenced to death. According to his lawyer, Serge Atlaoui could arrive in France in a few weeks.
