The Baby Driver phenomenon
The film Baby Driver (2017), directed by Edgar Wright, is part of a hybrid genre mixing action and thriller, and is distinguished by its frantic pace and its particularly careful soundtrack. Before working on this project, Wright had built a solid reputation with his films Shaun of the Dead (2004), Hot Fuzz (2007), and The World's End (2013). They were part of the “Cornetto Trilogy” and were characterized by their unique blend of comedy and film genres.
Baby Driver, written and directed by Wright, brand a turning point in his career by emphasizing the use of music as a driving force for storytelling. He also composed the soundtrack before even writing the script, an innovative choice which made it possible to give his creation this very unique staging. The film stars Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars), who plays Baby. Joining Elgort are Kevin Spacey (House of Cards), Jamie Foxx (Django Unchained), Lily James (Cinderella) and Jon Bernthal (The Punisher, The Walking Dead).
Baby Driver tells the story of Baby, a talented young man behind the wheel, who uses his music playlist to pull off heists as a getaway driver. After meeting Deborah, the woman of his dreams, Baby sees a chance to leave this criminal life and start again from scratch. But when he is forced to work for a ruthless man, he finds himself trapped following a heist that goes wrong. As the situation escalates, Baby is faced with an impossible choice between his life, his budding love and his desire for freedom.
