The new Minister of Justice, Gérald Darmanin, wants to extend police custody in cases of aggravated sexual violence and femicide.
With the Pélicot affair, the issue of violence against women is back in the news. The new Minister of Justice takes up this issue and proposes to better protect women who file complaints by extending the duration of a suspect's custody from two to three days. “It allows us to protect the woman who has been threatened, violated, attacked”declares Gérald Darmanin.
How many suspects could be affected by this measure? In France, more than 54,586 people were indicted last year, including 16,672 for rape, almost exclusively men. Would extending the time in police custody improve investigations? “It’s going in the right direction… It will make it possible to make greater use of telephony, emails, computers. Find a better home for the victim”replies a national secretary of the SCSI-CFDT.
