Between a Dynamic Island reduced in size thanks to new optical technology and a completely redesigned photo block at the back, the iPhone 17 Pro could radically change its look compared to its predecessors.
Since its introduction on the iPhone 14 Pro, the Dynamic Island has not really evolved. A new leak tells us that Apple should make a significant design change on the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max, with a smaller Dynamic Island, making it possible to increase the display surface of the screen.
Shared by the publication My Driversthe information would have been confirmed from several sources by the company Kuai Technology. We learn that Apple would switch to these two iPhone models, planned for the start of the 2025 school year, with a technology of “metal's”lenses made of nanoelements making it possible to make Face ID optics thinner and lighter, and therefore to reduce the size of the Dynamic Island.
A shrunken Dynamic Island and a new photo block?
These “metalens” do not work in the same way as traditional lenses. The latter use the curvature of their surface to manipulate light, while the “metalens” are flatlimiting the bulk of the optics.
We are slowly moving towards the complete disappearance of Face ID sensors visible on the front of iPhones. Ultimately, Apple would like to hide the optics under the screen. We have already seen this type of technology on a few Android smartphones, but it is still far from optimal. It should not be ready for iPhones for many years.
After the iPhone 16, which was rather timid in terms of new features, this new generation will have to be monitored carefully. We should see the arrival of a new model, thinner and lighter, to replace the iPhone Plus. This device, and perhaps other models in the iPhone 17 series, would have a brand new photo block, with the sensors positioned horizontally, a bit like what Google does with its Pixels. Since the iPhone 11, Apple's smartphones have been recognizable by their imposing and characteristic photo block in the upper left corner, this change would constitute a major design evolution.
