Montrealers who wish to dispose of their Christmas tree can consult the special collection schedules on the City of Montreal website.
On the day of collection, natural Christmas trees must be stripped of their decorations and placed at the edge of the street without obstructing the sidewalk, in front of the residence, before 7 a.m., according to the City of Montreal.
“Do you have a natural Christmas tree? After the holiday season, place it at the curb for the special Christmas tree collection,” indicates the municipal administration, specifying that trees can also be taken to ecocenters.
The recovered fir trees can be transformed into shavings and used as ground cover, but the majority will be crushed and recycled with the aim of energy recovery, according to administrative spokesperson Philippe Sabourin.
Last year, 290 tonnes of Christmas trees were recovered, or “the equivalent of the weight of 14 STM buses”, recalls the spokesperson for the City of Montreal.
“If snow is loaded during the collection day, we ask that the tree be temporarily removed from the public domain to facilitate snow removal operations,” urges Mr. Sabourin.
