Modernization in Parliament: Senegal adopts a secure digital voting system

The National Assembly of Senegal has taken a major step in its modernization by introducing a new electronic voting system. This change marks a break with traditional manual voting methods, often criticized for their slowness and lack of precision.

The new system is based on a digital platform capable of recording MPs’ votes in real time. Thanks to a biometric identification system, each elected official can vote quickly and securely, thus guaranteeing the authenticity of the decisions taken. The objective is to strengthen the transparency and efficiency of parliamentary deliberations. A notable feature also allows reporting on voting results instantly, making the entire process more traceable.

Among the main advantages, this system promises to significantly reduce human errors. Plenary sessions can be managed more efficiently, in particular by avoiding controversies linked to recording errors. Furthermore, this is an important step towards a broader digitalization of Senegalese public institutions, in line with the country’s ambitions in terms of digital transformation.

However, this advancement is not without challenges. Some experts warn of cybersecurity risks. The protection of MPs’ data and the integrity of votes must be guaranteed to avoid any attempt at hacking or manipulation. Furthermore, the success of this transition will depend on adequate training of users, particularly parliamentarians and technical staff.

This ambitious project is part of a context where several African countries are seeking to modernize their legislative institutions. With this initiative, Senegal positions itself as a model in digital governance in West Africa.
