Barely Christmas has passed, this Thursday, December 26, the first pancakes are already coming out of the oven at Maison Guéguen (Pains et Kouign), in Quimper. For the second year in a row, the beans were created by Quimper artist Pascal Jaouen, on the theme of land and sea, with a lighthouse, a crab, fish, a bird, a glazik flower. Three types of pancake are on the menu: the classic with frangipane, with homemade organic apples from Plozévet, and with chocolate.
500 additional cakes sold thanks to Pascal Jaouen
Only five hours were enough for the artist to draw the patterns on a blue background. “It was still a bit of a challenge to draw on such a small surface. I made the drawings on a larger surface than the beans, I could not anticipate the result it would have in real size. And I must say that I am very pleasantly surprised,” rejoices Pascal Jaouen. In total, 3,000 beans were produced by the Colas earthenware factory in Clamecy (Nièvre). The beans will be available for sale at the bakery. Pascal Jaouen will offer them in the form of a pendant.
The Pains et Kouign bakery of the Guéguen family, a historic place in Quimper, evokes a real Jaouen effect in the sales of its pancakes. “We have sold 500 more pancakes since Pascal Jaouen made the beans,” estimates Alain Guéguen, manager. The Cornish even go out of their way to get one of these beans. “When I worked in a bakery in Ploneour-Lanvern, some people came to ask me for a pancake with one of my beans. Except that they weren't here, but in Quimper! », remembers the stylist.
