The big and long construction sites follow one another, even overlap, in Caen (Calvados). The right bank, near the station, has not yet emerged from the restructuring of rue d'Auge, which will be completed at the beginning of 2026 with the Demi-Lune roundabout, which another construction site is spreading its canvas north of the city.
The urban heating network deployed in the heart of Chemin-Vert
Leaving Hérouville Saint-Clair in March 2024, the deployment of northern urban heating networkcarried out by Caen la mer and the Coriance group, successively reached in Caen the boulevard Clemenceau, the Pierre Heuzé and Calvaire Saint-Pierre districts by crossing the rue de la Délivrande, and the Caen Normandie University via the avenue from Brussels.
Since November, the work affects the Chemin-Vert district via rue Eugène Boudin, blocked from access via boulevard Richemond, above the Jardin des Plantes. They especially hinder l’avenue Robert Schuman. To be able to dig deep trenches, this is cut off to traffic between Racine and Chemin-Vert streets. Which makes approaching the new Monday morning market a little more complicated.
On this transverse axis, the situation must remain as it is at least until February 2, 2025, according to the decree of the City of Caen. This reminds that traffic and parking remain “prohibited” on Avenue Schuman from Rue Molière. And Corneille and Racine streets are “dead end”.
The future boiler room blocks the exit from the ring road
It's far from everything in the neighborhood. As suggested by the life base and the barriers placed by truck this Friday, December 20, the construction site tumbles onto rue de Champagneat the foot of the rehabilitated towers of Caen la mer Habitat.
There, the work must last until September 2025, until the heating network is connected to the new biomass boiler roombuilt on a plot already terraced on the rue de Tourainebetween interchange no. 7 of the ring road and boulevard Maréchal Juin. The boiler room, connected to that of Hérouville, must be started in October. Until then, rue de Touraine will be closed to traffic for 150 meters, and the exit from the ring road completely blocked towards the city center.
Two major projects planned in the neighborhood
The extension of the heating network, scheduled until 2031 in the Caen metropolitan area, foreshadows other major projects in Chemin-Vert. In the lower part of the neighborhood, the redevelopment of the Secqueville sectorwith the “divisive” destruction of nine Caen stone buildings, is due to start in 2025.
It must extend over three years.
It will therefore coincide with the planned bleeding of the district, from south to north, to pass through the future 4th tram linewhich will go up to Saint-Contest.
Postponed for one year, the work must begin in 2026. Commissioning is hoped for in July 2029.
