A few weeks ago, Caen Handball coach Sébastien Quintallet said he wanted remain undefeated at home this season. At the end of the derby against Cherbourg on Friday December 20, 2024 (32-25), the Vikings reached the objective in the first leg. Necessarily, this satisfies the Caen coach.
“A derby makes sense, it’s important”
Sébastien Quintallet: “We have seen this scenario several times this season. Teams that defend well during a half. Obviously, we want to play quickly so sometimes we made some mistakes. But we have confidence in ourselves and we know that when we set the pace for 60 minutes, we will maintain it and not them.
There was something at stake for everyone who follows us. We tried to answer that because the derby makes sense, it's important. But for us, the objective is to win every match. The fact that it's a derby is the icing on the cake.
Jean-Emmanuel Kouassi is good at the moment. We have an excellent pair of goalkeepers. To be able to rely on him with this level of performance is very good. The performance of goalkeepers is fundamental in our sport.
What Mario Dorado Perez offers is better and it's nice. We expected him at this level, what he had proposed on preparation. It is important in a team that everyone is satisfied and feels good. This will allow him to go on vacation on a positive note.
5th after the first leg is very good. We would have liked to finish on the podium of course. But it remains a very positive first phase. We're just halfway through the season. Our team is also made to progress throughout the year, during the return phase. We want to qualify for the playoffs at the very top of the table. But it's far from over. »
