The mayor of Martigues calls for a rally of support for Mayotte this Monday, December 23, a day of national mourning, at 11 a.m. in the hall of the Town Hall.
“In a spirit of solidarity, the City of Martigues, faithful to its humanist values, wishes to show its support for the Mahorais,” announces Mayor Gaby Charroux. A gathering is being organized this Monday December 23 at 11 a.m. in the hall of the Town Hall “in order to pay tribute to the victims and to show our solidarity with the inhabitants of Mayotte. We call on each and every one of you to join us to express our support and our determination to come to the aid of those who, Todayare in suffering. Together, let's stand in solidarity with the Mahorais.”
A “territory neglected for too long by the State”
In a press release, Gaby Charroux declared: “Mayotte is currently going through a terrible ordeal. The passage of Cyclone Chido is a real tragedy which devastated the archipelago and which plunged the population into a situation of great distress. To this day, we deplore 31 dead and 1,373 injured, while thousands of families saw their homes completely destroyed.
The landscapes have been disfigured and the urgency now is to allow our Mahorais compatriots to rebuild. In addition to this destruction, Mayotte faces shortages of vital resources: water, food and medicine are insufficient to meet the urgent needs of residents. The situation is all the more difficult as the government seems to be struggling to provide effective solutions to this crisis, and the controversies surrounding the absence of François Bayrou, the new Prime Minister, only amplify the feeling of legitimate abandonment felt by the population. This tragedy is a painful reminder of the fragilities of this territory neglected for too long by the State.”
Moments of contemplation are also offered in many towns in the department, and in particular in Port-de-Bouc, Istres, Arles, Aix. More details in our previous article.
