Much ado about little more than nothing: Congress holds and approves the financial law that avoids the nightmare shutdown for the United States. It will be a Holy Christmas for around 800 thousand workers who, with the blockade of state activities, would have risked losing their wages and in some cases even their jobs. The OK came a few minutes after midnight when the shutdown was virtually ready to loom over the economy and above all US federal and public bodies and agencies. But Congress, by resorting to emergency voting methods and bypassing the traditional voting system, managed to save the United States from the shutdown of public activities. Chuck Schumer, leader of the Democrats in the Senate, applauded the bipartisan approach which guaranteed “a good result for America and for the American people”.
The impasse was created when the Republicans blocked the laws proposed by the Democrats. The Dem “financial” bill came under fire because it did not include the suspension of the debt ceiling, a measure dear to Donald Trump. Who showed his teeth, engaging in a clash with Congress. And with the White House. Joe Biden did not plead but spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre accused: “Congressional Republicans did what they did because of what the President-elect said and what Elon Musk said. This is the reality. What they're doing is trying to clear the way for $5 trillion in our national debt. That's what this decision does. Their pitch was for billionaires, cutting Social Security, cutting Medicare.”
A clash that led to long and exhausting negotiations and mediations. Which, however, have had some important effects. And they suggest, together with international events, what Donald Trump's approach to the presidency will be. He will be tough, intransigent and ready to clash with everyone in order to assert his reasons and his program. However, he will not be impervious and disinterested in a real discussion on the issues with the interlocutors.
