2025 edition: Hungary, the music video and a birthday!

The next International Animated Film Festival will take place from June 8 to 14, 2025 and will pay tribute to thehungarian animation. It will also offer a dive into the heart of the unbridled creativity of music videoa teeming territory of experimentation! Finally, the 2025 edition will be an opportunity to celebrate a birthday

Every year, Festival offers professionals and the general public the opportunity to discover the best of animated cinema with the presentation of varied works from around the world. The 2024 edition was record-breaking with more than 103 countries represented, 17,400 accredited including 6,500 Mifa professionals.

Programming sideeach year the Festival offers the opportunity to discover the animation of a country: after Portugal, it will be the turn of Hungary.

“From this country, many know the dazzling feature films of Marcell Jankovics, Johnny Corncob (1973) et The son of the white mare (1981). These remarkable films, however, offer only a small glimpse of the scale and variety of production within the Pannonia Films studio, founded in 1951. Despite political upheavals, the historical richness of Hungarian animation has not been lost. is never denied. In 1981 Ferenc Rofusz won the Oscar for best animated short film for The Flywhile in 2005 Geza M. Toth saw his short film Maestro be nominated in the same category. Over the past twenty years, numerous student films have announced the arrival of a truly new wave: Milk Teeth by Tibor Banocki (2007), Rabbit and Deer by Peter Vacz (2013), Symphony No. 42 by Reka Bucsi (2013) to name a few. Recent successes of Flora Anna Buda's films (27), by Balazs Turai (Amok), and Nadja Andrasev (Symbiosis) and of Áron Gauder (Four Souls of Coyote) came to confirm this blossoming and prove the cultural dynamism and the profound originality of the production of this country. The major undertaking of digitization and restoration of the works by the Hungarian National Film Institute will allow Annecy 2025 to present the great classics of Hungarian animation in the best conditions. » Marcel Jean, artistic delegate of Annecy Festival Four Souls of Coyote but Áron Gauder

Another focus mentioned by Marcel Jean, the music video:

“Appearing during the 1980s, the music video quickly became a place of expression and exploration for many animators. If some of the filmmakers who have measured themselves against this format already enjoyed an enviable reputation (Jan Svankmajer, Michel Ocelot, Sylvain Chomet, John Kricfalusi…), others have rather found in their collaborations with musicians a favorable territory to develop rich and unique works. This is particularly the case for authors like Michel Gondry, Raman Djafari, Steve Cutts and Victor Haegelin. Annecy 2025 will be an opportunity to revisit the work of some major creators who have contributed to the recent history of animated cinema. »

Happy Birthday Mifa!

Finally, it is towards the Mifa (International Animated Film Market) that we will have to turn to blow out the candles: in 2025, the Market will celebrate its 40th anniversary!
A special event for the sector industry and more generally for cinema, the Mifa has become over the years, thanks to its uniqueness, a must.
Defining itself first and foremost as a space for exchanges, meetings and support, it has often been the trigger for initiating a project, a co-production, financing, a partnership, sales and an international career.

Beyond a return to symbolic journeys, this anniversary will obviously be an opportunity to consider the path traveled but also, and above all, to look forward to the next decade. Don't miss this meeting!

The entire Festival team wishes you happy holidays!
