A book box has been installed in the Breuzes district . Since 2017, this is the 14 e
in Bourges. Three new ones will be announced soon.
The success of book boxes is confirmed and Bourges is no exception. “It is a rapidly growing phenomenon in France. Since 2017, their number has increased fivefold (**),” illustrates Frédérique Baron, based on a 2023 survey. The director of the Berruyères libraries, which are responsible for monitoring requests and implementations, is delighted with the installation of a 14 e
book box in the town, in the Breuzes district (**), at the request of residents.
Three new book boxes planned
“This has something symbolic in this new district that has emerged far from the city center,” underlines Yannick Bedin, deputy mayor responsible for culture, emphasizing “the desire to create links”.
The instructions for using this self-service library are simple. People can deposit, choose and borrow a book freely, 7 days a week, and for free. “Because it is also important to have a non-commercial relationship with culture,” continues the elected official, who appreciates the idea “of circulating books and giving them a second life.” The work can be taken away or consumed on site, on the wooden benches or under the nearby pergola, “to bring culture and nature together”.
The municipal workshops which manufacture the book boxes and ensure their maintenance still have work to do. The network of the territory will continue with three other establishments planned soon at the Gibjoncs swimming pool, at the Jean-Brivot stadium and boulevard Chanzy. New requests have been made by associations and schools for 2025.
The ultimate objective of “these other accesses to books” is to cultivate a taste for reading, and by extension to encourage people to open the doors of libraries and bookstores.
