Real Madrid is obviously very active behind the scenes. And after exploring the trails of former NBA players now in Europe like Lonnie Walker IV (before he joined Zalgiris Kaunas) and Théo Maledon (ASVEL), Basketnews now mentions the name of Dennis Smith Jr.
Joining the Nets last season, the former 9th pick in the 2017 draft did not find a place in an NBA squad this season. However, he has just signed with Wisconsin Hern, the G-League franchise affiliated with Milwaukee, to hope to show his qualities at the G-League Showcase and recover from a trade.
But “DSJ” could also have the Europe option at hand, with the discovery of the Euroleague in the ranks of a giant of the continent. Real Madrid, however, have been struggling more since the start of the season, and are eagerly looking for a playmaker.
Relaunch in Europe or wait for an opening in the NBA?
The “Merengue” are currently rotating with the Dominican Andres Feliz and the Argentinian Facundo Campazzo on position 1, which the club is therefore seeking to boost. While Théo Maledon is flaming for his return to ASVEL, who should not let him leave during the season, Dennis Smith Jr. could be a choice alternative.
But also a serious unknown for a player who has never been able to find his role in the NBA. Impressive athletically, Dennis Smith Jr. was carted around from the Mavericks to the Knicks to the Pistons to the Blazers to the Hornets to the Nets in seven years in the league, due to not having a sufficiently reliable outside shot.
It remains to be seen whether an arrival in Spain at this stage of the season can really interest him, with only around three weeks remaining before January 10, the date on which partially or non-guaranteed contracts will have to be transformed into guaranteed lease in the Great League, if the franchises want to keep their players. Which could possibly open up a few places for the end of the season…
