Like every year, the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (Insee) reveals demographic figures in Brittany. What is the top 10 most populated cities? What about public intermunicipal cooperation establishments (EPCI)?

The top 5 most populated cities

Rennes remains (by far) the most populated commune in Brittany with 227 800 habitants . “Brest sees its population increase slightly, while it lost inhabitants over the period 2011-2016, to reach 141,000 inhabitants,” reports INSEE.

Followed by Quimper (64,500 inhabitants), Lorient (58,200 inhabitants) and Vannes (55,000 inhabitants).

Here are the top 5:

1. Rennes: 227,830 inhabitants, +0.9% average annual growth rate 2016-2022
2. Brest : 140 993, + 0,2 %
3. Quimper: 64,530, + 0.3%
4. Lorient: 58,202, + 0.3%
5. Valves: 54,955, +0.5%
6. Saint-Malo: 47,255, + 0.4%
7. Saint-Brieuc: 44,607, – 0.1%
8. Lanester: 23,188, + 0.6%
9. Concarneau: 20,632, + 1.3%
10. Fougères: 20,602, + 0.3%

Note the great breakthrough of Concarneau (Finistère) Concarneau which shows the strongest progression (+ 1.3%) of the municipalities between 20,000 to 50,000 inhabitants.

Concerning the EPCI, Rennes Métropole is unsurprisingly in the lead with 473,973 inhabitants. Then, it is Brest Métropole (213,403), Lorient Agglomération (208,113), Golfe du Morbihan – Vannes Agglomération (177,719) and Saint-Brieuc Armor Agglomération (154,023).

Population increase in Brittany

Brittany is one of the most demographically dynamic regions. As of January 1, 2022, Brittany has nearly 3 423 000 habitants. “Between 2016 and 2022, the Breton population will increase on average by 0.6% each year. This growth rate is higher than at the national level (+ 0.3%),” recalls INSEE.

With 1.1 million inhabitants, Ille-et-Vilaineis the most populated department of Brittany. Then, it is Finistère (927,912), Morbihan (776,103) and Côtes-d’Armor (609,598).
