Thursday December 19, 2024, the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies published the legal population figures established on 1is January 2022, which will serve as reference values in 2025.
Pour Quimperthe number of inhabitants retained is 64 530. This corresponds to a increase of 0.3% between 2016 and 2022 which follows an increase of 0.1% between 2011 and 2016.
This development is consistent with a regional trend: Breton municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants are seeing their population increase:
- The most populous Breton city, Rennes has 227,800 inhabitants in 2022 and is located at 11e rank of French cities. Between 2016 and 2022, the population of Rennes increased by 0.9% per year on average, slightly more than between 2011 and 2016 (+0.8%).
- With 141,000 inhabitants, Brest sees its population grow at an annual average of 0.2% over the period 2016-2022, while it lost inhabitants between 2011 and 2016 (-0.2%).
- The populations of the three other Breton cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants (Quimper, Lorient and Vannes) are also increasing.
- Concarneau displays very sustained growth in its population (+1.3%, the highest of Breton towns with more than 20,000 inhabitants), with 20,632 inhabitants.
The most dynamic territories in Finistère
The Finistère, 927,912 inhabitants in 2022, is the second most populated Breton department. Its population increases by 3,300 inhabitants on average per year. Between 2016 and 2022, the highest population growth was recorded in municipalities around:
- Quimperlé (like Mellac, +1.7%),
- Concarneau (Saint-Yvi, +1.6%),
- Pont-l’Abbé (Pleuven, +2.5%)
- Brest and Landerneau (Pencran +2.3%, Plougonvelin +1.4%, Guipavas +1%).
INSEE also notes that after losing inhabitants between 2011 and 2016, Plougasnou, Morlaix, Carhaix-Plouguer and Saint-Pol-de-Léon are returning to growth, while the number of inhabitants is stabilizing in Douarnenez and Penmarch.
More than 3 million in Brittany
Brittany had 3,422,845 inhabitants in 2022. Between 2016 and 2022, the population increased on average by 0.6% each year. “This growth rate is higher than at the national level (0.3%). Brittany is among the most demographically dynamic regions,” reveals INSEE.
All departments have gained new inhabitants. With 1.1 million inhabitants, Ille-et-Vilaine is the most populated department, followed by Finistère, then Morbihan and Côtes d’Armor.
