Video surveillance in Quimperlé: the debate is relaunched at the municipal council

A written question from Alain Kerhervé, elected from the Quimperlé opposition list first, and the written response from Michaël Quernez, the mayor of Quimperlé (Finistère), relaunched the debate on video surveillance, at the opening of the municipal council , Tuesday December 17, 2024.

In his letter, Alain Kerhervé recalls that for eight years, the project to install video protection has been part of the debate on the means to be implemented to best ensure the protection of property and people on our territory. He also recalls that in 2016, in response to the then opposition councilor, Marc Duhamel, the mayor had mentioned the installation of video surveillance cameras on Place Jean-Jaurès and public buildings. At your initiative, a first step is then included in the 2018 budget… But without follow-up.

Alain Kerhervé wants the development of a multi-year installation plan with a first step in the 2025 budget, requests a local referendum on the subject, or even the establishment of an extra-municipal commission.

The mayor, Michaël Quernez, also responded in writing, emphasizing that before considering a local referendum, it seems necessary to me to analyze […] with complete clarity and with the support of experts, the strategy and projects to be developed to improve the responses to the legitimate need for security expressed by our fellow citizens. No question of creating an extra-municipal commission, the deputy Eric Alagon has this delegation and his commission is working on the subject.”

During the debate, Michaël Quernez underlines that he you have to work on facts, not feelings.” He recalls having increased the number of municipal police officers, having reorganized the service. In March 2025, the coordination agreement between the city and the gendarmerie must be renewed. On this occasion, an update of the safety audit carried out in 2016 will be requested.
