On the threshold of winter, the association “Soup for the Homeless” is calling for a reminder. A peak of activity, which in no way avoids a lasting commitment, which takes place every Sunday, twelve months a year. Unchangeably, the sixty volunteers take turns to carry out, throughout the territory of the agglomeration, five tours intended to bring several hundred beneficiaries packages of 4 to 5 kilos of foodstuffs.
Inevitably, this Sunday action ends with a gathering of all the active forces, Cours Léopold. With the help of partner associations (service clubs, independent teams), hot meals are distributed for the benefit of 60 to 70 people. “At the height of our activity, parcel delivery concerns more than 300 people, or more than 60 tonnes of food per year. A figure up 12% compared to last year,” confides Grégoire Bouvier, president of the association.
Very precise criteria
“These are beneficiaries who meet very specific criteria, who are homeless or without resources, that is to say who do not even receive social minimums. And if, initially, our action consists of providing them with something to eat, we make a point of directing them towards social services so that a lasting solution can lead them towards reintegration. »
This observation, in any case, alerts, or at least encourages vigilance, because we must succeed in getting through the winter without interruption of activity. “The Food Bank and the generosity of certain supermarkets keep us going. And if Soup for the Homeless now focuses on purchasing local and organic products, in reality it is financial donations that ensure our survival. They represent 50% of our resources. »
Soup for the Homeless therefore needs money (75% tax exemption is possible due to its status as an association of general interest), but also warm clothing, such as shoes, jackets, bags. bedding, blankets…
