If the Grenoble municipal council of December 16, 2024 focused a lot on the municipal budget, other subjects were on the agenda and did not fail to spark debate. Among them, the developments planned for Place de Metz but also the future of the libraries. A subject raised during a deliberation aimed at kicking off the project management of the large library project. This must in fact see the light of day at Place Valentin-Haüy by 2027, accompanied by a “ recomposition complète » of the network.

It was difficult for opposition elected officials to miss this deliberation when a strike had affected Grenoble libraries two days earlier, Saturday December 14. And that a group of demonstrators was invited to the inauguration of the Chantal-Mauduit library the same day.
The opportunity for agents to recall an open letter, signed by the CGT and CFDT union organizations. Librarians denounced (among other things) their working conditions, management considered too centralized and a lack of visibility of missions.
If the unions did not directly mention the large library project in their open letter, Émilie Chalas judges that it greatly fuels their anger. The opposition representative therefore did not hesitate to quote the very words of the union letter, declaring: “ The librarians, who cannot be said to be rebels, went on strike on Saturday to denounce the substance and form of this project. »
