NATIONAL ASSEMBLY, THIERNO ALY SY ANNOUNCES HIS RESIGNATION

Thierno Aly Sy will only have spent a few days with the status of deputy. The man who had been called upon to replace Abass Fall announced his resignation from the 15th legislature in a letter sent to President El Malick Ndiaye. “Mr. President, I inform you by this letter of my decision to resign from my mandate in the National Assembly. Please accept, Mr. President, the expression of my highest consideration.”

This resignation comes amid reports of a conviction against Thierno Aly Sy in 2021 by the Dakar Court of Appeal to three months in prison suspended for “breach of trust”, a decision confirmed by the Supreme Court on 17 November 2022.

He was therefore ineligible for the Hemicycle according to articles 29 and 30 of the Senegalese Electoral Code. According to article 29: “Persons sentenced to a sentence of more than one month, even suspended, for offenses such as breach of trust, cannot appear on the electoral lists”, while number 30 says that: “This ban remains valid for five years following the conviction.”
