The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) arrested a Rivière-du-Loup resident on Wednesday who allegedly fomented hatred against ethnic and sexual groups on social media for more than a year.
According to the RCMP, the young man had been publishing hateful comments on the X and Telegram platforms for several months. The messages published by the hundreds mainly targeted Jewish communities and sexual minorities.
His identity cannot be revealed, as he was a minor when some of these offenses were allegedly committed.
“Our provincial threat coordination center received information about this individual because he was making disturbing comments […] since at least July 2023,” mentions Charles Poirier, Quebec spokesperson for the RCMP.
The suspect was arrested and questioned on February 8, 2024 in connection with similar offenses, but without being charged. A minor at the time, he was released conditionally. Which didn’t stop him from falling back into his bad habits.
“This is what precipitated his arrest and the filing of charges today,” specifies Mr. Poirier.
The suspect must appear Wednesday in the Youth Chamber of the Rivière-du-Loup courthouse for willful fomenting of hatred and willful fomenting of anti-Semitism.
The Integrated National Security Team was responsible for the investigation.
