The firefighters were called at 7:51 a.m., Wednesday December 11, 2024, rue de Bernay in Thiberville. 13 of them had to shut down an overheating boiler at the Janine-Vancayzeele college, specifies the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS) of Eure.

The establishment was closed and the 300 students sent home for safety. A situation that is set to last.

It was around seven o'clock that a maintenance technician from the Department of Eure spotted the malfunction, when he noticed the absence of heating in the establishment. The temperature measured on the walls in the technical room was around 120°C.

He immediately notified the firefighters and the college services. Thanks to our good reflexes, we avoided the worst“, declared Florence Gautier, vice-president of the Departmental Council in charge of colleges, in a press release.

The oil boiler supplies the establishment with heating and domestic hot water. Problem: The intense heat in the affected room could have melted electrical cables and electronic components. Work is therefore necessary.

The Department of Eure specifies, in its press release, that technical teams will carry out safety checks tomorrow to determine the causes of the overheating and carry out repairs to the boiler.

However, this diagnosis and this work “could be long, especially if networks are affected and if it turns out that it is necessary to replace not one, but both boilers which supply the establishment“, notes the press release.

Already the resumption of classes before the Christmas holidays seems very compromised“, concludes the Department.
