A man, who according to his lawyer suffered from a serious mental illness, died Tuesday at the Bagneux police station (Hauts-de-Seine) while in police custody, the Nanterre prosecutor's office told AFP on Wednesday.
The death of this 34-year-old man “occurred on the afternoon of Tuesday, December 10 during a police custody measure that began on Sunday for offenses against drug legislation in the premises of the Bagneux police station.” we specified from the same source.
“The Nanterre public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into the causes of death, entrusted to the IGPN,” he added.
The thirty-year-old's custody was suspended on Monday due to initial discomfort and the man was briefly hospitalized before it was resumed, consistent sources indicated.
His family, represented by Me Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard and Me Agnès Lowenstein, “will obviously file a complaint”, declared Me Lowenstein.
According to her, the man suffered from “a serious mental pathology” and was “under reinforced guardianship”.
“This raises a major question about the lack of cooperation between health and justice and the way in which vulnerable people are treated by the police,” said the lawyer.
