Edwin Guyot presents his three new guests Nacera, Nina and Carlos, dromedaries who are starting a new life, here in Haute-Marne, alongside this young passionate breeder.
Haute-Marne can pride itself on being a land of agricultural innovation. Proof of this is once again with Edwin Guyot, an animal lover, who, step by step, carries out his camel breeding project. It is true that these animals do not roam the countryside or the forests of our department. “It was while watching a documentary on camels broadcast by the Arte channel that I fell in awe of these camelids. Beyond the beauty of the animal, its capacity for resistance and resilience, this are its many virtues which fascinated me from the start, I said to myself, this is what I want to do.
An innovative territorial project
It is true that its new residents are renowned for the quality of their milk and its various derivatives: cheese, butter and therapeutic products which strengthen the immune system, prevent and relieve autoimmune diseases, diabetes, various allergies… Initially nothing predestined our young sportsman and future breeder to this unusual project. After following a scientific course, with his idea, he decided to prepare a BTS ACSE (Analysis, management and strategy of the agricultural business) which will allow him to carry out his very unique business. This is not enough for him, he goes on an internship in Larzac where a camel breeder shares her passion with him and gives him valuable advice. There are three breeding sites in France in the North, in Larzac and in Lozère.
A new association
Edwin is part of this perspective and last spring he created an association “les bossus Haut-Marnais”.
“This association, with 115 members, has the mission of promoting the world of large camelids, of introducing people to their atypical environment through events, meetings, private or private exchanges. I also wish to raise public awareness of respect for living beings and the agricultural system of which camels are an integral part, applying the principles of sustainable agriculture concerned with the preservation of spaces and biological systems”, confides Edwin with the passion that characterizes him. The long-term objective is to organize a variety of events: visits, educational activities, animal mediation, walks in immersive experiences, etc.
10 to 20 ha to accommodate your livestock
For the moment, the breeder is taking great care of his new residents who are still very young but who should reach maturity in two years. All these beautiful people are hosted on the outskirts of Chaumont by a generous owner who makes his premises and his pastures available for the great good of his tenants.
Edwin is looking for new meadows between 10 and 20 ha to base his project, specifying that it is “ready to invest in future approved installations necessary for its future innovative agricultural operation“.
This new activity therefore combines economic, tourist, social, cultural, health development… so many assets that it would be a shame not to highlight in our territory.
Namely, camelids can be of great use in forest management. They are used in particular in the south of France to create fire-fighting spaces. So when we know that our territory is home to the National Forest Park…
