A man in his 70s was assaulted in a wanton attack Wednesday afternoon as he walked to the emergency entrance at Seven Oaks Hospital in Winnipeg, police said in a news release.
The Police Department was called to the scene shortly after 5 p.m.
Security personnel at the establishment informed law enforcement that the victim, a 74-year-old man, had suffered upper body injuries following an attack and that the attacker had taken the leak, police said on Saturday.
After opening an investigation, police discovered that a man had approached the septuagenarian outside the hospital and attacked him for no apparent reason. The victim fell during the altercation and hit his head on the sidewalk, losing consciousness.
The attacker fled before the police arrived. The elderly man was treated in hospital.
Police identified a 30-year-old man as a suspect and arrested him during an unrelated call for service Thursday night.
He was charged with assault and the Winnipeg Police Service discovered he had an outstanding immigration warrant.
Law enforcement notified the Canada Border Services Agency. The attacker is behind bars for the moment, police add.
