Jean Vilar College in Angers: details from the Department
This Monday, teachers from the Jean Vilar college in Angers asserted their right of withdrawal, believing that asbestos dust had been detected in this establishment, following work undertaken during the autumn holidays. The Department, which is following this matter with the greatest vigilance, wishes to provide the following elements:
- At the end of October, during a construction phase taking place during the school holiday period, an incident was indeed reported with a possible risk of asbestos dust pollution.
- Subsequently, a preventive decontamination protocol was put in place and air analyzes were carried out.
- The results of these analyzes carried out near the scene of the incident by a specialized laboratory demonstrated, according to official standards, the total absence of asbestos fibers in the air.
- This incident aroused concern among the educational community about the state of the health risk linked to the presence of asbestos within the college.
- In order to objectivize the situation, the Department commissioned an independent and specialized company (the company BATI which notably has a branch in Beaucouzé)
- Its report, concluding that there is no risk for users, taking into account the air analyzes already carried out at the request of the establishment in April 2024, the state of the materials and the intervention protocols put in place by the community, was presented to the members of the board of directors on November 25
- Parents of students have also been invited to an information meeting dedicated to this subject which will take place on Monday December 9, 2024 at 5:30 p.m. in the establishment's premises.
- The Department, very attentive to the situation of this college, has made a commitment to carry out annual air analyzes to ensure the absence of asbestos fibers over time and thus reassure users.
- Currently, in the Pays de la Loire region, according to estimates from various experts, around 50% of buildings, all types combined, are affected by the presence of asbestos (source: Regional study asbestos and its waste in Pays de la Loire – Summary of estimates – ATLANCE data)
