Fifteen Alaska Native groups have filed a lawsuit opposing a gold mine near Stewart, British Columbia. They fear that possible tailings from the Seagold mine, which is still under development, will pollute the Unuk and Nass rivers, rivers vital to their survival. Rodrigue Turgeon, lawyer and co-lead of the national program at Mining Watch Canada, discusses the situation.
If there is a spill, it could constitute a tragic accident like the one at Mount Polley. Moreover, the environmental assessments of the current project date from before the Mount Polley tragedy. This is in the event of a complete dike failure, but mining activities have impacts on water without there even being spills of this kind.
