South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared emergency martial law. He accuses the South Korean opposition of controlling parliament, sympathizing with North Korea and paralyzing the government with subversive activities. This is reported by various news agencies.
Yoon made the announcement on TV. The step is necessary to maintain constitutional order in South Korea:
“In order to protect liberal South Korea from the threat of North Korea’s communist forces and eliminate subversive elements… I hereby declare a state of emergency martial law.”

It is still unclear what the step actually means. The South Korean currency Won lost massively in value, as reported by the Reuters news agency. Violations of government instructions would result in arrests. Large demonstrations are banned, the media should be placed under martial law command and centrally controlled.
The South Korean news agency Yonhap reports, The South Korean defense minister ordered a meeting of key commanders and called for increased vigilanceafter President Yoon Suk Yeol declared a state of emergency. The minister also ordered that the military remain on alert. Photos on social media are said to already show military vehicles in Seoul.
According to media reports, parliament is locked and neither members nor anyone else has access. The opposition leader addresses the South Korean people and says: “Dear fellow citizens, please come to the National Assembly.”
